“Imagination, dreams, mysticism, emotional staging, excellent photography with digital collage and painting, that would be a short version of the works in this exhibition. The artist Katerina Belkina (*1974) grew up in Samara on the Volga and received a diploma at the Academy of Arts there. At the beginning of the 2000s, she deepened her interest in photography at Michael Musorin's photography school. The art world had had a hard time with photography for many years; the medium was only depictive and not characterized by free creative work and statements like fine art. For Katerina Belkina, photography is the medium for realizing her artistic ideas. The three-dimensional space offers her the framework and the stage in which she can express herself. The image content is staged choreographically and is in no way inferior to a film concept with moving images.
Katerina Belkina directs the interplay of idea, actors, location, light, atmosphere, color, space and self-created props. The artist highlights the visual artistic result of photography with digital collage and painting to perfection. The static photographic work of art stands on its own and does not fit into or out of a temporal series of images, as in moving film sequences. In our exhibition “DREAM WALKERS AND MAGIC THINGS” we show works from the cycle of German fairy tales that Katerina Belkina dedicated to from 2019 to 2021. For the artist, these fairy tales are a metaphor for the existence of generally valid norms, an archetypal narrative of good and evil, a literary and cultural reference point in European countries. The content-rich collection of Grimm's fairy tales stands for cultural identity and common roots. The fascination of fairy tales lies primarily in the visual development in our heads. They stimulate the imagination and develop our judgment with their role model character. Katerina Belkina's elaborate image productions visualize the narrative, but do not limit the viewer's imagination. The aspiring photo artist is well on her way to securing a permanent place for herself in the world of photographic art through ideas, craftsmanship, consistency and perseverance. Katerina Belkina has lived and worked in Werder (Havel) for several years. It is a pleasure for her and everyone involved to be able to show a selection from her fairy tale cycle to all visitors, young and old, especially during the Christmas season.
