The Till Richter Museum is delighted to work together a second time with the Russian artist Katerina Belkina (lives and works in Berlin). After closing our series of nude photography on the subject of Ideal Beauty with works by Belkina, we are now opening the series of still-life photography with the works of this award-winning artist (Cranach Award 2015, Hasselblad Masters Award 2016).
The art historical connection of her works in the Repast-Triptych, which appear as a very unique transformation of photography and painting, is not as direct as in the previously shown Paint series. Still, the images remind us not only of the obvious Leonardo reference but also of Dutch and German masters of still-life painting like Pieter Claesz, Adriaen Coorte or Georg Flegel.
Often, as in this exhibition, still-lifes are strongly charged symbolically. They invite us to meditate on the vanitas theme or even on the sense of life itself.
