“Cranach City” is the umbrella under which nearly 40 participants, primarily from the local community, have gathered with approximately 70 projects, each contributing in their own way to the anniversary year of the Renaissance painter. The Wittenberg Cranach Foundation and its partners, who have been featured in several reports, are organizing exhibitions, some of which are already underway, such as the showcase of Cranach in Philately.
On April 18, the exhibition “Cranach 2.0” will open and run until July 5 in the Exerzierhalle. This exhibition will present 65 selected works from the international competition of the same name, which received 639 entries across various genres, according to Marlies Schmidt, an art historian with the Cranach Foundation.
Another exhibition focusing on the theme “Cranach Today” is “Cranach and Modernity” by the Foundation of Christian Art, which will also open on April 18. According to director Jutta Brinkmann, this exhibition at the Old Town Hall juxtaposes well-known biblical motifs from Cranach with corresponding works from the foundation’s collection, “building a bridge from the Renaissance to the present day.”
Additionally, during the opening weekend in April, visitors can view an open-air exhibition by Wittenberg artist Ulrike Kirchner. Her “Fragmentarium” engages with the façade of the “Arsenal” on Bürgermeisterstraße, offering a unique outdoor experience.
