OTHER PERSPECTIVES - GETTING TO KNOW CONTEMPORARY RUSSIAN ART
What defines contemporary Russian art? Of course, we are all probably familiar with the world-famous performance artists from Pussy Riot or the very extreme Pyotr Pavlensky (who nailed his scrotum to Red Square and sewed his mouth shut), and through these action artists, we may associate Russian art with political protest. However, there are also less loud and less media-present creators who reflect their environment artistically without placing political contexts at the center. Since not many names come to mind at first, I think it's great that the "Russian Contemporary Art Week" is starting in Berlin on Thursday. From May 15th to 21st, 2015, we can gain insights into the works of selected Russian contemporary artists, experience performance art, and see a modern Russia from various aesthetic perspectives at three venues: the "The Ballery" gallery in Schöneberg, the LemoArt Gallery in Prenzlauer Berg, and Panke in Wedding. For example, the artist Katerina Belkina, who captures the paradox between an emancipated, energetic woman and her paralyzing environment in a Russian metropolis in her series "Light and Heavy" (image above). The RCAW aims to direct attention beyond the mainstream to the scene of Russian artists working in Berlin. We are excited to discover what will be presented.
