Katerina Belkina
Russia/Germany
Fairytales feed our imagination and are meant to hone our critical mind. A fascination with fairytales inspired Katerina Belkina to create her own interpretations of them. Her images reside somewhere between written and oral tradition. They lay out a narrative for a story without curbing imagination, allowing the viewer to enter the realm of Dreamwalkers. During a time of radical cultural oppositions dividing the human race, it is essential to find common ground and kinship. Belkina's works provide for it and that makes them very relevant. *1974 in Samara. She was brought up in a creative atmosphere by her mother, a visual artist. She studied painting at the Art Academy and, in 2000, photography at Michael Musori' School for Photography. She has held numerous international exhibitions of her mystical 'painted' photographs. Awards: 2007, Kandinsky Prize nominee, Moscow; 2015, the International Lucas Cranach Award; 2016, the Hasselblad Masters Award. She lives and works in Werder (Havel) near Berlin.
